Jackpot exists for southern Idaho gamblers — Twin Falls is 45 minutes north — and it suits travellers who want Nevada casino-hotel amenities as a stopover between the Pacific Northwest and Utah/Nevada beyond, or as an unlikely golf-and-gamble weekend. Cactus Petes is genuinely a full-service resort (large pool, showroom with legitimate touring acts, 18-hole golf course) and its sister property Horseshu is a lower-cost casino-hotel next door. Who should skip it
Skip Jackpot if you’re not from southern Idaho or specifically stopping on US-93 — it is not a destination anyone flies for, and the drive from Vegas or Reno is genuinely long (7+ hours from Vegas, 5.5 from Reno). Skip it if you want any restaurants outside the two casino properties; there are essentially none. Skip winter without prepared driving; US-93 crosses open range and blizzards happen. Skip it if you don’t gamble — there is literally almost nothing else to do beyond the golf course, the pool, and short drives into open sagebrush country.
What's within walking distance
Cactus Petes and Horseshu sit directly across the highway from each other and you can walk between them in 3 minutes. That is essentially the town. Cactus Petes has restaurants, the pool, a spa, the showroom, and the 18-hole Jackpot Golf Course adjacent. A gas station, a small convenience store, and a couple of shops complete the townsite. Not walkable but nearby: Salmon Falls Creek Reservoir (a spectacular canyon reservoir 25 minutes northeast in Idaho, worth the detour), and Twin Falls, Idaho, with Shoshone Falls (higher than Niagara) at 50 minutes north.

Why is there a casino town in the middle of nowhere?
Idaho outlawed gambling, Nevada didn’t. Jackpot was founded in 1954 specifically to catch Idaho drivers crossing the state line. That is still its economic model and it works — Cactus Petes fills reliably on weekends.
Is there anything to do besides gamble?
Golf at Jackpot Golf Course (18 holes, high-desert layout at 5,300 feet), the resort pool in season, and drives to Salmon Falls Creek Reservoir or Shoshone Falls. That is the honest list. This is not a town where you plan hiking or sightseeing days.
