Lake Las Vegas — a 320-acre man-made lake with a mock-Tuscan village — is genuinely pretty at sunset and suits couples wanting a lower-key anniversary trip. Families like Green Valley Ranch's pool, which is more relaxed than any Strip pool and has a sand-bottom beach section for younger children.
Who should skip it
Skip Henderson if your trip is mostly Strip nightlife — rideshare each way is $20-$30 and takes 25-35 minutes, and public transport is essentially non-existent for tourists. Skip Lake Las Vegas specifically if you want walkable dining variety: the village has maybe eight restaurants and they close early. Henderson is a car city, laid out on wide arterial roads, and outside the resort clusters there is nothing to walk to. Older parts of Henderson near Water Street have been redeveloped nicely but you would not stay there without a specific reason.
What's within walking distance
From Green Valley Ranch you can walk to the District at Green Valley Ranch, an outdoor plaza with a Whole Foods, a dozen restaurants and a small green with weekend live music. From Lake Las Vegas properties (Westin, Hilton Lake Las Vegas) you can walk the lake loop trail — about 2 miles around the marina — and reach MonteLago Village's restaurants and shops. From the M Resort at the south end, essentially nothing is walkable; it is stranded off the I-15 exit. Hoover Dam is 25 minutes; the Historic Railroad Trail trailhead is 20 minutes.

Is Henderson safer than Las Vegas proper?
Statistically yes — Henderson consistently ranks among the safer mid-size US cities, and the resort areas (Green Valley Ranch, Lake Las Vegas, Anthem) are very low-crime. This is often the deciding factor for families staying a week.
Can I do Hoover Dam without a car from Henderson?
Not easily. There is no public transport to the dam. Tour buses will collect from Henderson resorts (roughly $55-$80 per person) but if you plan to visit Lake Mead too, renting a car for one day makes more sense.
