Winter and early spring
Reno sits at 4,500 feet with actual winter: 45F highs in January, 25F nights, and occasional snow that clears fast. Hotel rates at the Peppermill, Silver Legacy and Grand Sierra bottom out January through early March at $55-90 midweek. This is also the base for skiing Mt. Rose (25 minutes) and Palisades Tahoe (45 minutes with clear roads), and Reno rooms are half the price of anything lakeside.
March and April are windy and unpredictable but pleasant when calm. The Reno Rodeo qualifier events start in spring. April brings 65F afternoons and the parks green up. Rates stay reasonable through April at $80-120 outside event weekends. This is a good stretch for exploring downtown's Riverwalk and the Midtown District without crowds.
Summer festival season
Reno's summer is dry and warm — 90F days, 55F nights, low humidity, and skies clear enough that outdoor events dominate. Hot August Nights in early August fills every hotel in town with classic car crowds and pushes rates to $200-320. The Great Reno Balloon Race in early September and the National Championship Air Races in mid-September (when running) do the same.
Between events, midweek July rates hover at $100-150. The Truckee River through downtown is genuinely swimmable and locals float it on tubes. Nevada Museum of Art has extended summer hours. Burning Man traffic hits Reno hard in the last week of August and the first week of September — hotels near the airport fill with dust-covered vehicles and prices jump 40% for those two weekends.
Autumn and holidays
Late September through October is Reno's best weather: 75F days, 45F nights, low fire risk once the first storm hits, and cottonwoods turning yellow along the river. Rates ease to $80-130 midweek. This is when to do the Virginia City day trip (30 minutes up the hill) or drive Geiger Grade with fall color.
November quiets down until Thanksgiving. December is mixed: cold and often snowy, with holiday light displays at Greater Nevada Field and the Peppermill decorated to the eaves. Christmas week itself is quiet in Reno — locals leave for Tahoe or family — and rates drop to $70-110 except New Year's Eve, which spikes to $180-260 across every downtown casino.

It runs the first full week of August. Avoid it only if you dislike classic cars and crowds — otherwise it's Reno's signature event, but book six months out and expect $250+ rooms downtown.
Is Reno a good winter base for skiing?
Yes. Rooms are half the price of Tahoe, Mt. Rose is 25 minutes away, and Palisades and Northstar are 45-60 minutes when I-80 and 267 are clear. Just budget for chain conditions after storms.
