When to visit Nevada: month-by-month

Nevada spans desert to alpine — no single month is best statewide, but there's a right month for what you want.

January to April

January: coldest, cheapest Vegas rooms ($80 to $130 midweek), Tahoe skiing at peak. Convention crowds (CES first week) spike Vegas prices. February: valentines and Super Bowl weekend hit hard — plan around them. March: shoulder-perfect for southern Nevada road trips (Valley of Fire, Red Rock, Death Valley from Vegas), spring break weekends busy. April: Vegas pools open, temps 70 to 85°F — arguably the best month in southern Nevada.

May to August

May: Tahoe still cold, snow lingers on high passes. June: Vegas starts hitting 100°F, but pool season is in full swing. July and August: brutal — Vegas 105 to 115°F, hike only at dawn. This is when you go north — Tahoe, Great Basin National Park, the Ruby Mountains near Elko. Book Tahoe 3 months ahead for July weekends. Burning Man is late August into September in the Black Rock Desert.

September to December

September: still hot in Vegas but manageable, and Tahoe is stunning with warm days and cold nights. October: peak shoulder — Vegas 70 to 90°F, Great Basin aspens turning gold, road trip conditions perfect. November: Tahoe ski areas open mid-month typically, Vegas quiets down, best month for hiking Valley of Fire. December: New Year's Eve on the Strip is a $500-a-night circus; the two weeks before Christmas are the year's quietest and cheapest in Vegas.

Good to know

Questions, answered

When is Vegas cheapest?

Second week of December (post-NFR rodeo, pre-Christmas) and mid-January midweek. Rooms drop to $50 to $90 at mid-tier Strip properties.

Can I ski and swim in the same trip?

Yes, in March and early April. Tahoe still skiing, Vegas pool decks reopen. It's a 7-hour drive between them.
