The route and timing
Take I-15 north from Vegas 33 miles, exit SR 169 east, another 20 miles into the park. Leave the Strip by 7am to beat heat and crowds — by 10am in April to October, temperatures pass 90°F and the exposed hikes get punishing. $15 per vehicle entry. Full loop back via Overton and Lake Mead National Recreation Area adds 45 minutes and better views. Total day: 6 to 8 hours including 3 or 4 short hikes.
What to actually do
Priority hits: Fire Wave (1.5-mile round trip, red-and-white striped rock), Elephant Rock (5-minute walk from parking), Atlatl Rock petroglyphs (steel staircase, 15 minutes), and the White Domes loop (1.1 miles, slot canyon section). Skip Rainbow Vista unless you have a full day. The visitor center is worth 20 minutes for the geology exhibit. Bring 3 liters of water per person minimum in warm months — there are no reliable water sources past the entrance.

Can I do Valley of Fire without a car?
Only on organized tours from Vegas ($95 to $160 per person). Public transit doesn’t reach the park.
Is it worth staying overnight?
Two campgrounds are decent but book out months ahead. Overton (10 minutes from the park) has basic motels around $85. Most visitors are better off day-tripping from Vegas or Mesquite.
