Where to stay
Peppermill on South Virginia is the flagship — theatrical, kitschy, with the best spa in the city and rooms from $130. Whitney Peak on Virginia Street is downtown's non-gaming boutique, better food, better design, $180 to $260. Grand Sierra out by the airport is huge, has a good pool and an indoor go-kart track, but you’ll drive everywhere. Skip: the tired old Circus Circus Reno and anything on West 4th Street, which has real quality issues.
What to do
The Riverwalk along the Truckee is genuinely nice — walk it from Wingfield Park to the National Automobile Museum (the Harrah's Collection, $14 admission, worth 90 minutes). MidTown Reno south of downtown has the best food and drink — Süp for brunch, Death and Taxes for cocktails, Pignic for beer garden. In summer, kayak the Truckee whitewater park downtown. In winter, Mt. Rose ski area is 30 minutes and lift tickets are $130, half of Tahoe's big resorts.

Questions, answered
How long from Reno to Lake Tahoe?
45 minutes to Incline Village on Nevada side, 60 minutes to South Lake Tahoe. The Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431) is the scenic route but closes in heavy snow.
Is Reno cheaper than Vegas?
Rooms are 30 to 40% cheaper, food is comparable, and gambling minimums are lower. Show tickets and dining lack Vegas's high end entirely — for headliners, drive to Vegas.
