Las Vegas Strip area guide for first-time visitors

The Strip is 4.2 miles long and walking end-to-end will destroy you — here's how to base yourself sensibly.

The three zones

Split the Strip into thirds. South Strip (Mandalay Bay to MGM) is closest to the airport (10 minutes) and has the T-Mobile Arena. Mid-Strip (Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, Caesars, Paris, Venetian) is where you actually want to be — walking distance to Bellagio Fountains, the best restaurants, and the Sphere. North Strip (Wynn, Resorts World, Sahara, Strat) is quieter, better priced, but you’ll Uber a lot. Where you sleep affects everything about your trip.

Getting around

The Strip Monorail runs east side only (MGM Grand to Sahara), $6 single, $15 day pass — useful but limited. Deuce buses run the full Strip and Downtown, $8 for 2 hours. Uber and Lyft are the default, $12 to $25 for most Strip trips, but pickup requires walking to specific valet areas at every casino. Walking is deceptive — Mandalay Bay to Venetian is 2.5 miles and takes 50 minutes counting casino detours. Wear real shoes.

What to actually do

Free stuff first: Bellagio Fountains (every 30 minutes from 3pm, 15 minutes after 8pm), Bellagio Conservatory, Fall of Atlantis at Caesars Forum Shops, the Volcano at the Mirage (verify current status — it's been on and off). Pay stuff: the Sphere show ($99 to $349), High Roller observation wheel ($30 daytime), the Fountains-view rooms at Bellagio for $80 extra a night. Skip most museums — they’re tourist traps except for the Neon Museum downtown.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Where should first-timers stay on the Strip?

Mid-Strip: Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, Paris, Flamingo or Horseshoe. Everything is walkable and you avoid the endless Ubering that comes with north or south Strip stays.

Is the Strip safe at night?

Yes, on the main sidewalk with the crowds. Side streets and pedestrian bridges after 2am can attract aggressive panhandling — use rideshare after last call rather than walking back to your hotel.

Doing good is the business: every booking through Stay Nevada funds one verified tonne of carbon removal — same room, same price, no markup.
